The regular use of face masks to help prevent the spread of COVID-19 is critically important for the health and safety of our families and communities and will help flatten the curve. However, wearing masks regularly may have some unwanted consequences for your skin. Here are the effects of protective masks on the skin:
• Mask edges continuously rubbing in specific areas of the skin may result in chafing and visible irritation.
• While the enclosed area of the mask is protecting us, it is also creating a micro-environment of warm moisture. This can compromise our skin function.
• Acne breakouts and chronic skin conditions are likely to flare due to the increased stress and disruptive micro-environment created by the mask.
I was recently speaking with Joanie Amistoso, our ARNP who also works in Urgent Care, and her skin is definitely “feeling the pain” from all her personal protective equipment. So, we created some treatment options to help reduce her dryness, chaffing and breakouts.
Need some deep cleaning?
We recommend Epionce Lytic Gel Cleanser or Purifying Wash. This is going to penetrate your pores for a deep-down clean. Then follow that up with Lytic Plus Tx or Lytic Sport Tx to help reduce visible redness and breakouts. Lastly, apply Renewal Lite Facial Lotion twice daily to rejuvenate angry skin.
Have chafing and visible irritation?
We recommend calming and hydrating the skin barrier with ceramide and cholesterol-rich Renewal Calming Cream or Medical Barrier Cream as needed. Then for an overnight boost of hydration add-in the Enriched Firming mask to calm visible redness.
We are here to help guide you through this. If you’re experiencing skin issues from wearing a mask, please reach out to schedule a complimentary virtual visit. Our Master Aestheticians are available to answer your questions and make recommendations. Epionce is also available to shop from our website.
Lots of love and thanks to Joanie for working so hard to diagnose and care for those with COVID-19. Stay healthy!
